Anderson, South Carolina Newborn Photographer | When is the best time to schedule a newborn session?

Updated: Mar 5, 2021

Congratulations! You are expecting a new baby! If you are thinking about booking a posed session for your newborn, you may wonder what is the best time to contact me. Before the birth? After? What if the baby decides to come early? Or late? Those are great questions!

Newborn clients typically come to the studio between 4 days and 21 days of age. This is the time the baby is the most sleepy, bendable, and poseable. After the 3 week mark, they are much harder to pose unless they are wrapped up, and they stay awake for longer stretches of time. A sleepy baby is much easier to pose than an awake one!

Ideally, you would contact me at least a couple months prior to the due date. That way, you are guaranteed a spot on my calendar. At booking, I will go over the type of session you have in mind, and then send you my booking form. Once you fill out the form and return it to me, I take down your projected due date and put it on my calendar. That is all you have to do until the baby arrives!

Of course, babies come on their own time. It is very rare that the baby will be born on their actual due date, so I am always prepared for that. If you have a scheduled delivery planned, feel free to let me know, so that I can update your due date. But if you spontaneously go into labor, please don't worry about me! All I want you to worry about is delivering that baby!

Once the baby has safely been delivered, and you have had some time to catch your breath, that is the time to shoot me a message and let me know that the baby has been born. Within 24 -48 hours of the birth is a good time frame, so that we can discuss potential days for you to come to the studio during that 3 week time frame.

Premature babies come with their own rules. If a baby arrives early and must spend time in the NICU, they are allowed as much time as they need to grow and to gain their strength! Just let me know the baby is here, so that I can make a note of the baby's arrival in my calendar. Once the baby is strong enough to come home and is cleared by the doctor, just contact me again, and we will schedule the session at that time. Being the parent of a premature baby can be so stressful, but just know that no matter how long it takes, once the baby is strong enough, it will be my honor to take beautiful portraits of your little fighter!

Newborn photography is my passion, and I am so grateful for all of the families who have trusted me to capture this all-too short time in their lives. Newborns are only newborns for a month, so it is SO important to capture those precious moments while you can!
